Pittsburgh Pirates Rebuild Could Be A Quick One

While the Pittsburgh Pirates 2017 season has been largely underwhelming and disappointing, the team’s future looks bright, especially on the mound. That is as long as ownership and the front office do not snuff the hope out of the team.

As it stands right now, the Pirates are eight games under .500 and 9 1/2 games out of the nearest available playoff spot. The season is essentially over. If the front office and ownership were smart, they would give plenty of opportunity to some prospects waiting a turn to crack the big leagues.

Tyler Glasnow has not pitched in the majors since early June. However, he has looked solid with Triple-A Indianapolis boasting a 1.99 ERA with the club. Glasnow hasn’t made the transition to the big leagues he would’ve hoped to make this season. I know fans have soured on him, but with some offseason work, he could help the Buccos much more next season than he did this season. Slow and steady wins the race after all, and the Buccos certainly like to build slooooooowly, don’t they?

Steven Brault has also looked solid at Triple-A Indianapolis boasting a 1.94 ERA, 8.2 K/9, 3.3 BB/9, 52.2 GB. Drew Hutchison, Nick Kingham and Clay Holmes have also looked good in the minors.

What is promising is that the Pirates control the rights to everyone in their current rotation for at least two more seasons beyond this one. So an off-season move or two could be a possibility, especially with Gerrit Cole likely being on the trading block.

Kingham will be out of options next season, making his name one to watch as well. Of course, rotation depth charts have a way of changing quickly.

We all know one thing needs to change in Pittsburgh to ensure the team’s success on the field. They need to become a team that makes a big splash at the deadlines to get the team over the hump and make a run deep into the playoffs.

In my next post I’ll take a look at the projected offense for next season as it pertains to the Buccos prospects.
