Giants vs. Jets Preseason Game 3 Preview

We are at that point in the preseason again. The Giants against the Jets, also known as the Met Life Bowl/Snoopy Bowl or in the eyes of Jets’ fans the Super Bowl. Jet fans usually have nothing else to look forward to each year, so they take the preseason game against the Giants a bit too serious. However, I want to take a look at a few things to look for in the Giants’ third preseason game.

Back Up QB

This has been one of the hottest topics for the Giants this preseason as Josh Johnson and Geno Smith continue to battle it out for the number two quarterback spot. Will someone gain an edge today? The answer is yes. Geno will take a big leap against his former team in a “revenge” type of game. Neither QB has been very good thus far. In two preseason games Geno has thrown for 193 yards and completed 64% of his passes, but has thrown two (should be three) interceptions. Johnson has only had 14 pass attempts, while has has completed half of those for 37 yards and 0 interceptions. I think Geno will win the battle even though he has been having some troubles with interceptions. Geno has the higher upside and let us be real, if Eli goes down the season is over anyway.

Kicking Competition

Another competition between two players. Mike Nugent against Aldrick Rosas for the kicking spot on the Giants’ roster. Both players have done just fine so far as neither of them has missed a field goal. Neither has had the chance to kick an extra point because the horrid offense has yet to score a touchdown. We will see today if someone can create some separation. If I had a choice right now, I would take Rosas. He is younger and inexperienced, but Nugent’s last season was nothing to brag about and it seems as if he is on his way out.

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie the safety?

Last week was the first time in his ten year career that DRC lined up as a safety in the NFL. When asked about it Cromartie said it was most likely a one time thing as the Giants were trying out different packages. However, could we see it more often during the season? Would it make sense? A secondary of Collins, Jenkins, DRC, Apple and then Valentino Blake at the nickel corner? Or will it be DRC at the nickel corner and one of Thompson and Adams at the safety position? Look to see if DRC will line up again at safety today. Either way, the Giants defensive backs will be among the best in the league once again.

Can the Giants finally score a touchdown?

You read that right. The Giants have yet to score a touchdown this preseason. It really is not as big of a deal as it seems. Once again, it is only PRESEASON. Over the years I have been watching the Giants they always look horrendous in the preseason. So once again, I am not worried one bit. Odell Beckham will not play due to an ankle injury and we are not sure if Marshall will suit up. If Marshall does he probably will not play much due to his shoulder issue. I think they finally score a touchdown today as it will come from Geno Smith as he gets his “revenge” on the Jets.

Watch the Offensive Line

The biggest issue for the Giants this upcoming season, as we all know, will be the offensive line. People are saying Flowers looked better last game, but he did not. The people saying that do not understand football. He let up a sack, albeit it was not his fault as the quarterback stepped right into it. However, he was getting bullied around by first overall pick Myles Garrett all game. He was pushing Flowers right into the quarterback and closing up that pocket. A tight pocket makes a quarterback feel very uncomfortable and he has to step it up if the Giants are going to succeed. Flowers is not the only Giants offensive lineman who is struggling. Justin Pugh, Weston Richburg and John Jerry are all struggling as well. Pugh and Richburg are supposed to be our best O-Lineman and I believe they will be fine once the season comes around. However, John Jerry may lose his job as D.J. Fluker and Brett Jones are beginning to creep up behind him.

All I know is I am getting tired of watching preseason football. I do not want to watch back ups any more and the energy just is not the same. September 10th cannot come fast enough!
