Kyrie Irving Shipped Off to Boston

Boston: Kyrie Irving
Cleveland: Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, BKN 2018 1st-Round Pick

The rumors have been there the whole time, but wow I did not expect it. I think this is a great move by the Cavaliers, but not so much for Boston. The Celtics are going to start losing some love from their fans as they are shipping off some fan favorites this off-season. The more moves the Celtics make the less I like what they are doing.

Boston worked so hard this off-season to improve their team. They got their “superstar” when they signed Gordon Hayward to a 4-year/$127M contract in free agency. He added that much needed second scorer to take some of the load off of Isaiah Thomas.

They then went out and traded away Avery Bradley to the Pistons for Marcus Morris. I did not like the move, as Bradley is one of the best 3 and D players in the game. The Celtics made the move to improve at the Power Forward position and they did so by making this deal. However, they lost a fan favorite and a phenomenal defensive player. They do have some young guards that can slide into the shooting guard position, but once again I was not a fan of this move.

Now comes the Kyrie trade. Shams reported that the Celtics have acquired Kyrie in exchange or Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and Brooklyn’s 2018 first round pick. I thought the Cavaliers had no negotiation powers as everyone knew that Kyrie wanted out. I thought wherever he was moved to, it would be for a much less significant package than they would have received if he kept his mouth shut. They did a great job and the Celtics are going downhill.

Now do not get me wrong, Kyrie Irving is the best player being moved in this deal. However, was it worth it for the Celtics? You had a point guard who has the same type of game as Kyrie, but Kyrie does it better. Both players can score, neither really is a great passer or defender. Isaiah is also the fan favorite and was the obvious leader of the Boston Celtics. He took them to the next level last season and was one of the best players in the 4th quarter in the NBA. This is how you repay the man? I know he is going to play with LeBron, but that is just for a season. Rumors have it that LeBron is getting out of town after this year.

I am not a big fan of moving Jae Crowder either. Another fan favorite and a key piece off the bench for the Celtics. He would have provided a lot of energy off the bench for them as Gordon Hayward would be the obvious starter. Last season Crowder played over 30 minutes per game and provided a little more than 13 points per game. Ante Zizic is a player that some Celtics personnel raved about. He was drafted in the 2016 draft, while still being very young and raw. He most likely will never be a huge scorer, but some scouts say he can be a double digit rebound per game type of player with fantastic defense in the middle.

The trade does not end there. The Celtics also gave up the Nets’ 2018 first round pick. The Nets will most likely be a bottom five team in the NBA this season. Therefore, their pick will most likely be a top five pick. The Celtics shipped off a fan favorite and rising point guard in Isaiah Thomas, a player that seemed to be a key bench piece this upcoming season in Jae Crowder, a young big man who still had room to grow and a top five pick in next year’s draft for a player that may leave in two years. Do you like it? I do not.

Isaiah Thomas seemed to love it in Boston and I would almost guarantee that when his contract was up, he would re-sign with Boston. Kyrie is under contract for two years and has a player option in his third year, which he will most likely decline. Will he like Boston? Will he want to stay a Celtic? Who knows.

Now the question is, do the Celtics get passed the Cavaliers this year? They do still have that LeBron James guy, they have one of the deepest teams in the league and they still have a top 10 point guard in IT. If they do get past the Cavs this year, do they beat the Warriors? Do they beat the Rockets? How about the Thunder, Spurs, Timberwolves or Clippers? Kyrie will most likely stay for his two years and leave Boston. Is this trade really worth it for two years and possibly not winning a championship? I do not think it was worth it, but you tell me Boston. How do you feel?
