Tarik Black Waived by Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers opened up some cap room on Saturday by releasing veteran forward/center Tarik Black. Black started 16 games for the Lakers last year, and averaged 5.3 points and 5.1 rebounds per contest. The former Memphis Tiger and Kansas Jayhawk played a lot of big minutes last season especially when the Lakers shut down Timofey Mozgov and Luol Deng late in the season. Black’s contract would have become guaranteed if he was still on the roster on July 4th. Black would have been due 6.7 million dollars if the Lakers would have kept him on the roster. He was grateful for the Lakers and his time spent in Los Angeles, and he paid respect to the Lakers organization with a very heartfelt Instagram post in which he thanked the entire Lakers staff, fans, and organization for the time he spent as a Laker. It is evident the Lakers decided to move on in a different direction and spend the money elsewhere this off season to continue to build for the future. Larry Nance, Julius Randle, Brook Lopez, and Thomas Bryant will be three players who will get additional minutes for the Lakers with Black’s departure from Los Angeles. This may not seem like a huge move for the Lakers, but they are continuing to find ways to free up cap space for the 2018 off-season in which the Lakers are rumored to be in the hunt for California kid Paul George. Saving this $6.7 million may just be enough to land a big time free agent for the Lakers in the near future!
